Hypertongue- The Cave July 4th 2019 Written By Penny Howard with Sharp Talent Productions
The excitement and anticipation was high at The Cave on Thursday July 4th. The audience was all there to see Hypertongue perform on the stage. Pre-show people were able to mingle and talk, share some good food and just relax in the setting that has become the staple at The Cave. Although the show started later then was suggested it was still a solid performance. Steve, Matt and Dale started off the night with 3 hard hitting originals, You’re the Reason, Live and Learn and Dramatic Silence. This is a tight band; they know who they are and what they do. They have reached a comfort level with each other so there is not much experimenting taking place just good tunes being played. Matt (bass) can adeptly supply interesting sounds and inversions that add to the symphonic quality of the lines and chords that have been written. Matt holds down serious bottom end on the bass while Steve brings the song into a jammer space on the guitar. The vocals were taken care of soulfully and competently also by Steve. These guys maintain “the pocket” that lies in the groove of every original piece they executed. Dale was hearty on drums as always, hitting each with the force of a bull on steroids. The one song that sticks out in my mind that was performed during the night was “The Devil is a Woman.” As I listened and observed I could see multiple camera phones working overtime to record this exceptional song. Many guests saw the confidence stream from each artist as they laid down their portion of the tune. The free flow of energy from stage to audience and back again is everything that fans crave and Hypertongue’s individual members are able to give that with compromise.
